gymSAFE Movement Screen Certification

To be a certified gymSAFE movement screen administrator, you must attend level 1 gymSAFE Movement Screen Course and pass the certification test.

Individuals who are qualified to participate in the class include

  • Physical therapists/physical therapist assistants

  • Athletic trainers

  • Chiropractors

  • Medical doctors

  • Coaches with an exercise science or kinesiology degree

Participants must have experience in movement analysis, teaching exercises, and the ability to do manual muscle testing.

Once certified, you will be allowed to access the gymSAFE movement screen online through which you can administer the screen. You will have access to the tool for free for 1 year after your course, after which you will pay a monthly membership fee to continue to have access.

gymSAFE Movement Screen Level 1 (GSMS 1) - 12 hour course

Learn the entire screen and be able to administer the screen with your gymnasts. This is a 2 day course. On the second day, you will actually administer the screen on gymnasts.

gymSAFE Movement Screen Level 2 (GSMS 2) - 6 hour course

Learn how to teach the gymSAFE Movement Screen Interventions.


Movement Screen Training 1 - May 18 & 19, 2024

Location: On the Move Physical Therapy & Pilates (501-D Old Country R, Belmont, CA 94002)

Day 1 May 18th (8:30am - 4:00pm PST)
830-900 : Intro to screen
900-930: App and Screen Logistics (Login, Add gymnasts/gyms, Pricing, Waivers etc.)
930-1030: Movement portion of screen
1030-1130: Manual Muscle Test portion of screen
1130-1200: ROM portion of screen
1200-100: Lunch
100-400: Observe a screen and perform a screen with supervision

Day 2 May 19th (9:00am - 2:30pm PST)
9:00-1030: Perform a screen with supervision
1030-1100: Answer Qs & Communicating next steps 
1100-1130: Printing and Educating gymnasts about the evaluation summary
1130-1200: Lunch
1200-130: Individual performance and observation of screens on gymnasts
130-230 Prehab and wrap up

  1. What if I have a gymnast who wants to be screened?

    They can volunteer day 1 and/or 2, and get a free screen!

  2. Closest Airport?

    We are approved for 1.2 CEUs in California (CPTA #23-235). Please let us know if you need any information for you to get CEUs from your state.

  6. What is the student to faculty ratio?

    The course is a lecture with a hands-on lab, with a student to faculty ratio of 5:1.

  1. Independently perform a gymSAFE screen with an individual gymnast

  3. Produce a report card that you can give to gymnast

Speaker Bios:

Alyssa Herrera-Set, DPT, Co-founder of gymSAFE
Alyssa started gymnastics as a young child and has been in love with performing, observing, and teaching body movement ever since.  Although her competitive gymnastics career ended before high school, she has never left the sport of gymnastics.  She has taught recreational and special needs gymnastics for over 20 years.  She received a doctorate in physical therapy at UCSF and pilates education through Polestar Pilates.  She is a board certified Sports Clinical Specialist, and a Pilates Method Alliance comprehensively Certified Pilates Teacher.  Her area of expertise as a physical therapist is working with pediatric and adolescent gymnasts and dancers.

She sees her role as a physical therapist as one who educates the public about injury prevention, assists people in reaching their goals after injury, and guides people in improving their performance post-rehabilitation. 

She is  a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science, and USA Gymnastics.   She is the owner of On the Move Physical Therapy in Belmont, CA .  She has been published in the mobile application AgileMD, a library of trusted medical resources.

Jessica Wickizer, Co-founder of gymSAFE
Jessica is an active member of USA Gymnastics as a judge, choreographer, and nationally rated coach. She began her career in high school, and after 20 years of coaching competitive teams, she maintains a relentless enthusiasm for the sport of gymnastics.

Jessica earned a BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona. While in college, she was awarded three consecutive coaching awards including "Rookie Optional Coach of the Year". While living in San Francisco, she worked as both a Developmental Director and a Head Coach, and was lucky to meet Alyssa Herrera-Set and develop a shared passion for injury prevention. She has found a new gymnastics home at AZ Dynamics in Tucson as a Compulsory and Optional Coach, and as the Preschool Director.

Jessica believes that watching students develop throughout their gymnastics careers, and beyond, is the greatest reward of her profession. She is passionate about the life long benefits of  this sport. Keeping our athletes healthy is the key to keeping them in the gym long enough to maximize these benefits.
